Following the legend, Cleto got its name from the goddess Cleta, mother of Pentesilea the queen of the Amazons. It is reported that Cleta after the death of her daughter by the hand of Achilles in Troy, arrived in the golf of Santa Eufemia and once she came here she founded this city, where she reigned with a counsel of women, and to which she gave her name. Cleto is an antique village with Byzantine and medieval traces, built on a rock 200 mt. above sea -level. The historic - centre until today has conserved the charm of the past times in (rural) country-life. Going up-hill through picturesque streets you’ll also meet antique palaces with small gardens and on the top of the rock you’ll see the remains of the big castle with its impressive towers.
